The Helsingborg Declaration for a sustainable logistic supply chain
Helsingborg is awarded as one of Europe’s most innovative and climate-smart cities and has Sweden’s best logistics location, according to Intelligent Logistics’ latest ranking. Now The City of Helsingborg is taking the next step towards the goal of being Europe’s most sustainable logistics hub through The Helsingborg Declaration, and The Port has signed.
Representatives from all areas of the logistics sector have signed The Helsingborg Declaration and The Port of Helsingborg have signed the initiative to accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral production in the logistics sector by 2030.
– This is a milestone for the logistics sector’s sustainability work. For the first time, representatives from all areas of the logistic chain have agreed on common goals and a framework to achieve a climate-neutral production by 2030. It is historic, says Peter Danielsson, chairman of The Municipal Board of Helsingborg and initiator of The Helsingborg Declaration.
Initiatives and collaborations
For many years, The Port have worked towards its climate goals and a fossil-free production. Goals achieved include an electrified fleet of company cars, installation of two solar plants to reduce the load on the grid during the days when usage is high, investment in electric terminal tractors and environmentally friendly biodiesel fuel for the heavy-duty production machines.
In 2021, The Port of Helsingborg signed the Scanian Electrification Agreement, which aims to create more sustainable ways of growth for the logistic sector in The Region. The agreement will also ensure sufficient energy capacity in The Region, that the grid within The Region is expanded and that more production of local electricity is established.
– It is the right time to cooperatively take action towards a more sustainable future for the logistics sector. We can all contribute something to get better. It is also in line with The Port’s environment and climate initiatives to become the Nordic region’s most modern port, says Bart Steijaert, CEO at The Port of Helsingborg.
Investments in smart technology and new infrastructure to streamline processes are part of The Port’s sustainability plan and an integral part of the development of the new container terminal, which will be in operation 2028. To optimize operations and prepare for the planned re-location, a new Terminal Operating System (TOS) is currently being implemented. This project falls under the third area of the declaration.
