A sustainable vessel call – Laura Maersk calls the Port of Helsingborg in a new feeder service
On the 30th of October, the container vessel Laura Maersk makes her first call at the Port of Helsingborg. The vessel is the world’s first methanol-enabled container vessel and an essential milestone for the global shipping industry. This state-of-the-art container vessel and new service will call the Port of Helsingborg weekly.
The world’s greenest feeder service has developed in close cooperation and with frequent dialogues. The agreement between Maersk and the Port of Helsingborg, which creates opportunities for cargo to reach several global markets, was recently finalized. On Monday, the 30th of October, the Port of Helsingborg could welcome the container ship Laura Maersk to the quay in the Port’s container terminal.
– First and foremost, we are very proud and excited to welcome Maersk back to the Port of Helsingborg with their own container vessel, and it’s extra special that it will be Laura Maersk, the world’s first methanol-enabled container vessel. This feeder service strengthens the Port of Helsingborg’s position in the market and the whole region. It opens up new business opportunities for the shippers who are now also able to significantly reduce the carbon footprint in their supply chains with shipments onboard Laura Maersk via Helsingborg, says Mark Wieden, Key Account Manager in Port of Helsingborg.
Laura Maersk is a historic milestone for the global container carrier Maersk. The vessel marks the start of the global container carrier’s major and ambitious initiative to use renewable methanol as vessel fuel. While Laura Maersk is the first vessel, the company has an additional 25 methanol vessels on order for delivery between 2024 and 2027.
– Laura Maersk and the innovation she brings into the industry, is the proof that change in our approach to decarbonising shipping is possible. But in order to make that change, we need to collaborate in close partnerships – with governments and authorities, with suppliers and vendors, but also with our customers, to whom we offer a range of products aimed at reducing their carbon footprint, like Maersk ECO Delivery Ocean. We look forward to seeing more customers and logistics providers working hand in hand to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Laura Maersk is the much-needed step in the right direction on our pathway to be emission net zero across our operations by 2040, says Birna Ödefors, Managing Director, Nordics – A.P. Moller Maersk.

About biomethanol as vessel fuel:
Biomethanol is a renewable fuel produced from biogenic, recycled carbon dioxide. From a well-to-wake perspective, no new carbon dioxide is emitted during combustion. Carbon dioxide emissions can ideally be reduced by up to 95 % compared to conventional ship fuels.
